The Central Ninth neighborhood is rapidly redeveloping, attracting a younger demographic, a variety of housing types, and innovative startups. This transformation brings a unique opportunity to reimagine our urban spaces. For too long the off ramp for West Temple split this community and created an unused eye sore. The Central Ninth Community Council created a subcommittee to tackle the underpass and create a new space that will offer a place for connection, relaxation, recreation, and community gatherings, enhancing the charm of Central Ninth and Ballpark neighborhoods.
Meet Up at MeadUP
We're excited to transform the space under the freeway overpass on Mead Avenue into a vibrant community gathering place. Our vision is to create a welcoming, functional, and aesthetically pleasing area that serves the diverse needs of our Central Ninth neighborhood and creates a healthy and happy community. We have formally named the space MeadUP and you can learn more about our efforts at https://www.centralninth.org/underpass-project.html
Community Lead, Community Engaged
This project is a grassroots movement. Residents in the community pitched the idea to UDOT and Salt Lake City. Through a Love Your Block grant in 2024, we cleaned and branded the space for the community. Through a 2025 Love Your Block grant and a 2025 Arts, Culture, & Entertainment (ACE) Fund grant, we are working to activate the space in a project we are called MeadUP25!
As part of MeadUp25, we are looking for volunteers to help us cleanup and maintain the space for several events this coming season.
